Welcome to the AUTISM Frostbite 5K page!

I would like to thank all of my facebook friends & family for helping out with the
fundraiser which will be benefitting Aboard. (Advisory Board on Autism and Related
Disorders).

I would like to introduce myself and tell you alittle on my involvment with Autism
Spectrum Disorder. My name is TJ Burke and I just recently moved to the Pittsburgh
area in April of this year 2011 to pursue my career in Law Enforcement. I am testing
with several Departments. I first started working with Autism in 2006 when I was
hired as a TSS (wrap-around) with St. Anthony’s Point & St. Michael’s Harbour, Inc.

St. Michael’s Harbour, Inc. started a program called Transition to the Adulthood
Program (TAP) which was developed to meet an identifiable service gap existing for
young adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) during the transition between
high school and young adulthood and I worked as a Trainer Advocate.

Over the last several years working with my low functioning autistic client I learned a
new part of life. Before working with my client I didnt know what Autism was, never
heard of it. When I first got my client he was very aggressive, non verbal, and had
poor motor skills. At first I questioned myself if this is really what I wanted to do.
During our time together I learned so many different things from him but at the
same time I was able to implement strong plans with his family to help him
become more verbal, less- aggressive, and increase his motor skills.  One thing
that really helped me over the years working with Autism was when my adult client
from the TAP program told me to think as if I had Autism. Amazing experience
working with St. Anthony's Point & St. Michael's Harbour.

Currently I am employed with UPMC as a Public Safety Officer, State Security &
Investigation Services as a Private Security Agent, and Community Day School as
the 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach.

On Saturday, January 28th, 2012 we will host our very first Autism
Frostbite 5K Run at North Park. I am so excited to invite you to
sponsor the race, benefiting the Advisory Board on Autism and
Related Disorders (ABOARD) and their mission of providing a
lifeline to support families and individuals affected by autism.
ABOARD gives hope and information to families and professionals
by connecting them with each other, and to the resources that
enable them to navigate their unique challenges.
